How to record a FaceTime or Zoom video call on your Mac
StompLink records both sides of a call, with video of the call window and your guitar straight from your interface, and saves it on your Mac. Here’s how, and what macOS can already do on its own.
Ask first. Please get everyone’s consent before you record a call, audio or video. The rules vary by place.
What macOS does on its own
Recent versions of macOS can record some FaceTime audio calls by themselves. If that covers what you need, you don’t need anything else. StompLink is for the cases that doesn’t cover: video calls, other call apps like Zoom, Google Meet, Teams or Discord, and recordings that include your gear’s direct sound instead of a mic picking up your amp.
Step 1: Set up the call
Choose StompLink as the call app’s microphone and speaker. See the video call guide or the lesson setup guide.
Step 2: Turn on the Recording destination
Under Destinations, switch Recording on. Its feed pills choose which sources go into the recording: usually your Stomp device, your mic and the call. Add an app like GarageBand if you want the backing track in the recording too.
Step 3: Video or audio only
With video on, StompLink records a window. On Auto, it picks your FaceTime, Zoom, Google Meet, Teams or Discord window for you, or you can choose any window yourself. macOS will ask you to allow screen recording the first time. Turn video off to record just the sound.
Quality and where files go
The window is recorded at full Retina resolution as high-quality H.264 video, with 256 kbps AAC audio, picture and sound kept in sync. Recordings are saved on your Mac and stay there. StompLink never uploads them.
Recording without a call
The same switch works for practice: record your guitar with a backing track, with or without video. Or pick StompLink as the input in GarageBand, Logic or Ableton to record your mix straight into your DAW.
Troubleshooting
The wrong window was recorded
Switch from Auto to choosing the window yourself before you start.
The recording has no video
Check that StompLink is allowed under System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen Recording (the name varies slightly between macOS versions), then try again.
One side is missing from the recording
Check the Recording destination’s feed pills: the call and your sources each need to be switched on.
